The Valkyrie Squash Club was founded in 2003 on the site where Sea Bright Squash Club was incorporated in the 1930's and was erected from an old trolley turnabout built in the late 1890's.
From trolley turnabout, to coal depot, to Badminton, and to sparring ring for the famed Joe Louis, the squash club is rich in history. The courts today are accessed through an alleyway coined "Badminton court", for the famed Badminton Tournaments that took place throughout the early twenties and thirties. In those days Sea Bright hosted hundreds of Badminton players from around the world. There were many times when forty to fifty sleeping bags could be found on court the night before a big tournament.
Sometime in the early 1930's Jerry Meyer built a singles squash court adjacent to the then very active badminton court. In the early 1950's Jerry decided he was getting to old to play the very demanding singles squash game and converted the old trolley car barn into an American doubles court. He did this himself at a cost of $6,500. At that time there were no showers or locker rooms so players would walk through a courtyard to Jerry's mother's apartment. There were players clothes hanging from about every doorknob and nail from the courts to Jerry's mothers apartment, an area that became known as the "Hanging Gardens of Sodom and Gomorrah".
As time went on squash gained in popularity as interest in badminton diminished until, 1960, when the last badminton tournament was held in Sea Bright. The courts at that time were sold off to a German couple Hilda and Harold Schnabolk. The Schnabolks built two additional courts in place of the larger badminton court, several years later they sold off the first building that housed the original squash court as well as Jerry Meyer's mother's apartment.
In 1961, Bill Robinson, editor of Yachting Magazine, long time Rumson resident and avid player, organized a team to participate in the Metropolitan Squash Racquets League. This was to be the beginning of a long ongoing and distinguished series of teams that has brought many trophies and plaques home to Sea Bright.
The Sea Bright singles teams brought home first or second place in 1964/65, 70/71, 71/72, 73/74, 77/78, 82/83,87/88, 88/89, 90/91,91/92
Being that Sea Bright is only several hundred yards wide at most and stands as a barrier peninsula protecting Rumson from the Atlantic there have been several floods and even a fire during one of the tournaments. None of this deterred the competitive spirit of the players. In 1962, water made it to just below the court floor, players unhampered by a little salt water, waded through holding their shoes before entering the court to dry off and play.
Today the club has undergone major renovation since falling into receivership many years ago. It is once again a state-of-the-art facility. The club can be accessed via Badminton Court which is located between Angelica's restaurant and Element's lounge in downtown Sea Bright. Don't blink please, because you'll miss it - not the club, downtown Sea Bright.
